Complete yards, outdoor living environments, hillside solutions and connected multi-scope projects. We discuss investment early so design decisions stay grounded in what you are prepared to build.
Discuss project fitA better way to remodel outdoors
Stop making expensive decisions one piece at a time.
A patio affects drainage. A retaining wall changes grade and access. A pergola changes circulation, shade and views. Planting has to work with all of it.
When those decisions are made separately, homeowners risk awkward transitions, avoidable rework and a yard that never feels fully resolved. RJ Landscape starts with the complete property, develops a visual direction and then defines how the pieces should be built together.

Featured transformationFrom steep slope to family landscape
A difficult hillside became a place to live.
The property called for more than a single wall or stairway. RJ Landscape collaborated with the homeowner on a complete direction that brought together an approximately 80-foot retaining wall, Tecate light stone stairs, custom carpentry, masonry and softscape.

Confidence is built before construction.
The plan is not decoration. It is the decision-making tool that connects what you want to how the property can actually be built.
Explore every stageUnderstand the property
We begin with your priorities, the way you want to live outside, the site conditions and a realistic investment conversation.
Design the complete vision
We organize spaces, circulation, materials, elevations, planting and key construction relationships in a cohesive plan.
See it before we build it
2D plans and 3D visual views help you evaluate the layout and refine important choices while changes are still on paper.
Build the approved direction
Once scope and expectations are clear, our team carries the design into construction with hands-on oversight.
What the design gives you
More than a pretty picture.
Your design becomes the shared reference for layout, proportion, material direction, major transitions and construction scope. It helps surface questions while answers are still easier to change.
- Understand the relationship between every major element
- Compare choices before materials are installed
- Align the vision with priorities and investment
- Give the construction team a clear direction to follow
Use, circulation, dimensions, grade and relationships.
Proportion, material character, planting and atmosphere.
A clear construction direction, sequence and expectation.

Built for the right fit
For homeowners who want the property solved—not patched.
Our strongest work happens when a homeowner values planning, wants several decisions coordinated and is ready to invest in a lasting result.
Likely a strong fit
- Complete backyard or front-yard remodel
- Hillside, retaining or drainage complexity
- Outdoor living with hardscape and carpentry
- A visual design before major construction
Usually not our focus
- Recurring mowing or garden maintenance
- One-time cleanup or mulch-only work
- A small isolated repair without a larger scope
- Lowest-price bidding without a defined plan

The RJ Landscape difference
Construction experience meets a modern design eye.
RJ Landscape is a father-and-son company. Rodolfo Mendieta brings more than 30 years of hands-on landscape construction experience. Juan Mendieta, a Merritt College Landscape Design graduate, brings the planning and visualization that let clients make decisions before construction.
Together, they connect the practical realities of building with the composition of a well-designed property—and stay personally involved from the first conversation through the final walkthrough.

What kind of projects are the best fit for RJ Landscape?+
We are best suited to thoughtful design-build projects: complete yard remodels, major outdoor living areas, hillside transformations, retaining and drainage work, or several connected improvements that need one coordinated plan. We are generally not the right fit for recurring maintenance or a single small repair.
Does every construction project begin with design?+
For complete and multi-scope projects, yes. Design is how we align the property, priorities, visual direction and likely construction scope before work begins. Simpler scopes are still planned carefully, even when a full 3D presentation is not necessary.
Can you help if we are unsure what the yard should look like?+
Yes. You do not need a finished design before calling. Bring the problems you want solved, the experiences you want the space to support and examples of what you are drawn to. We translate those inputs into a site-specific direction.
How do we keep the design aligned with our investment range?+
We discuss investment early, then use it to guide scale, materials, priorities and possible phasing. Final construction pricing follows a defined scope; existing conditions, access, engineering, permits and selections can all influence cost.
Where does RJ Landscape work?+
Our focus includes Contra Costa County, the Tri-Valley and Napa, with select projects in Marin, Sonoma, Solano and nearby Greater Bay Area communities. Project fit and travel depend on scope and location.
